Beware of Dangerous Teeth Whitening Procedures

Teeth whitening is becoming more and more common as people gain confidence from a bright smile. And when done under proper supervision teeth whitening is totally safe and worthwhile. However, in some cases you’re offered the service at a lower price with untrained professional providing the service. Such is the case with this store in Canada. The Manitoba Dental Association issued a warning to consumers over their practices.

Dr. Joel Antel of the MDA said that should give people pause. Antel said he worries the Pearly Whites’ treatment could hurt people if there’s no qualified dentist or hygienist involved.

“You could have pain or treatment needs that weren’t there beforehand … because of the whitening procedure,” Antel said.

Don Freedlander, president of the Canadian Dental Association, said teeth bleaching should be done only by dental professionals.

“I think there are contraindications to bleaching that it would be worthwhile to have your dentist check and those include various gum problems — tooth decay, exposed roots — and these are all things that I don’t think someone who’s in one of these bleaching clinics is able or qualified to check,” he said.

Most service firms (such as dentists, orthodontists, accountants, attorneys, contractors, engineers, etc.) raise their fees each year between 3-5%. The reason is to cover the cost of inflation, which grows at about that same rate every year. This means in order to be as profitable as he was last year, a dentist must raise his rates slightly.
