Kids are amazingly healthy and resilient in a lot of ways. They bounce back from sickness and injury faster than adults typically can. But when it comes to a healthy smile they are at risk for gum disease just like adults. That’s why early prevention is so important to make sure small problems don’t become big problems later on. The American Dental Association recommends children see a dentist no later than their first birthday. But the reality is that less than half of children see a dentist before kindergarten. Argus Leader explains more:

Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease affecting American children – five times more common than asthma. In fact, nearly one out of every four children ages 2 to 11 has untreated cavities in their baby teeth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

While the statistics sound dire, prevention is possible, dentists say. And the earlier you get started, the better.

“It used to be that you’d wait until you have a problem and then fix it,” says Dr. J.B. Skibinski, a dentist with Children’s Dental Center. Not anymore. Prevention is the buzz word in children’s dental care today.

“That’s the beautiful thing about dentistry,” says Dr. Pat Colbert, a dentist with Family Dental Center. “With home care and prevention, you can cut back on the vast, vast majority of problems today and in the future.”

The study gleaned data from 3,000 adults over a two-year period. The study concludes that a dental visit that diagnoses gum disease would be an ideal time to screen for diabetes. All Headline News reports:

The study reflected data from nearly 3,000 adults who participated in the 2003-20004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted by health officials to determine the status of adult and child health and nutrition.

Conductors of the survey found that 93 percent of people with gum disease were at high risk for diabetes, according to American Diabetes Association guidelines.

High blood pressure and having a direct relative with diabetes was prevalent among subjects with periodontal disease than subjects without the disease.

How do you feel right now? Would you say you’re happy? If so, you’re one of the reasons Tennessee is listed in the top 5 for happiest states in the U.S. A new survey that started four years ago by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collected data from 1.3 million people in all states and ranked their happiness based on various indicators. There was a tight correlation between states that rank as ‘happiest’ and states that have a high quality of life. There was also a high correlation to states that enjoy lots of sunshine and beautiful surroundings, which certainly fits a description of Tennessee. The Knoxville News-Sentinel also shares why states like New York and California ranked so low:

Rounding out the happy five were Hawaii, Florida, Tennessee and Arizona.

At the other end of the scale – last in happiness – is New York state.

As if to illustrate the problem, residents attending a meeting Wednesday in rural Queensbury unleashed their anger and cynicism at a state government they described as corrupt, self-dealing and too quick to increase taxes. It was a tirade that had one lifelong resident saying he was ready to flee “this stinkin’ state.”

Oswald suggested the long commutes, congestion and high prices around New York City account for some of the unhappiness.

He said he has been asked if the researchers expected that states like New York and California, which ranked 46th, would do so badly in the happiness ranking.

“I am only a little surprised,” he said. “Many people think these states would be marvelous places to live in. The problem is that if too many individuals think that way, they move into those states, and the resulting congestion and house prices make it a nonfulfilling prophecy.”

Many people who go to the dentist harbor deep fears about the visit. These fears can come from childhood experiences that have negatively affected the individual. It can be hard to overcome these fears, even as an adult. Because of this, a lot of dentists have used nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, in the past to help put patients at ease. But a growing trend has many recommending patients use oral sedatives as an alternative. The sedation isn’t meant to take the place of anesthetic such as Novocain. One benefit of using the pill is the reduced cost. Most dental insurance does not cover sedation. But a sedative pill costs only a few dollars. Dr. Konig from Houston Texas writes:

Dr. Konig said, “This has been wonderful for patients who value their smiles and are just too fearful or uncomfortable to complete treatment without sedation, It is also nice for the patient not to have to be completely out and have a quick recovery from the sedation.”

Typically, a nervous patient will take a sedative the night before to reduce anxiety and aid with sleeping. Before leaving for an appointment, the patient takes another sedative and is driven to the dentist’s office by someone else. Upon arriving at the office, the patient may take an additional dose depending on the patient’s level of sedation.

Sedation works to calm a patient, but it is not an anesthetic. Local anesthetics like Novocain are used to control discomfort during the procedure.

There is a new technique being used by pediatric dentists to help ease the stress of a dental visit for children. It involves getting rid of the drill, the anesthetic, and the pain. Sound too good to be true? Well in this case it isn’t. Dr. Loan Mao, a pediatric dentist in Detroit is helping to pioneer the new technique that uses lasers to cut away enamel. Since there’s no drill, there’s no need for a shot. It makes the whole experience much easier for children. Fox Detroit tells more:

Now Dr. Mao has a new trick up her sleeve, a new system that throws out the drills, the anesthesia, and the pain.

“Waterlase system is a laser,” said Dr. Mao. “There are two types, there’s the soft tissue laser and the hard tissue laser. Rather than using the drill you can use the laser, it removes a small portion of the tooth and then you just fill it conventionally like you would with a normal filling.

“It helps them to feel more comfortable coming to the dentist. You know, the whole purpose of pediatric dentistry, I think, is to build confidence in children, so they will bring that into adulthood.”

We’ve all heard the horror stories of long lines and rationed care. They serve as a warning to all who consider universal health care a viable option. In the United Kingdom, the ugly truth behind their health care system is evidenced in this recent article showing 8,000 people between two cities still await dental treatment. Nearly 1,500 of them requested an appointment more than 5 months ago. If that isn’t rationed care, it’s hard to imagine what is. Is this America’s future? Hopefully not.

MORE than 8,000 people in York and Selby are still waiting to see an NHS dentist – four times as many as the number of those who have been found a place for teeth treatment.

Figures which will go before City of York Council’s health watchdog this week on NHS dental provision across the two areas show that 1,491 people who put their name down on a dentistry database between five and six months ago have still not been assigned.

A report by NHS North Yorshire and York says there were 8,299 names on the waiting list as of November 10, while between April 1 and that date, dental places were found for 2,057 patients.

In the same period, 9,722 people were added on to the primary care trust’s database – which allows patients throughout the region to register to see an NHS dentist – with dental demand reaching a peak in May when 1,705 patients went on the list.

Lucretia Williams was in a terrible situation nearly ten years ago. Living with an abusive husband, she found herself in a choke hold, desperately biting to free herself. She succeeded, and soon thereafter left with her children to start over. But the fight caused serious damage to her bottom teeth, which eventually had to be removed. But thanks to a charitable program designed to help battered women, Lucretia will get her smile back very soon. The Sun Times tells more:

“I’ve been in the bathroom literally pulling up my bottom lip to cover it,” she said. “It’s hard. I’ll be trying to carry on a conversation knowing it can be seen, it is being seen and that they [the teeth] are not there.”

In about two weeks, Williams will hide her smile no longer. Partnered up with a Chicago dentist through a national program called Give Back A Smile, she has received extensive dental work as well as a new partial denture to fill in her missing teeth.

Give Back A Smile started a decade ago through the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. The program estimates that 827 domestic violence victims have received treatments worth a total of nearly $8 million.

Participants need to be out of the abusive relationship for at least a year, unless their partner is incarcerated. They also need to meet at least once with a counselor, minister or social worker, who signs off on the application.

There is no question dentistry has changed dramatically through the years. Technology has improved it by leaps and bounds. Steve Lundeberg illustrates this point in a recent blog post about his own experiences with dentistry. His colorful post is both humorous and informative:

Our dentist in those days was a fellow named Elton Storment, and though he was actually a very nice guy, someone once removed the S from the name on his sign, leaving him to be known briefly as Dr. Torment; my sister Debby seemed to find that particularly amusing, so much so that I now wonder if was actually she who modified the sign. Deb, assuming you still read my blog every now and then, what do you have to say for yourself on the subject?

Anyway, whereas nowadays dentists garb themselves up so much you’d think they were preparing to do brain surgery, back then the only difference, appearance-wise, between our dentist and any grown man in the waiting room was the smock the dentist always wore. There was certainly no mask or eye protection, and I don’t recall him wearing latex gloves.

Another key difference I’ve noticed between 1970s dentistry and now has to do with spitting into a sink; that is, you don’t don’t do it anymore. Instead, there’s that little vacuum cleaner attachment that you’re supposed to close your lips around so it can siphon away all of the debris-laden saliva. I really never have gotten the hang of that; always feel like a part of my mouth is going to end up torn off and hurtling through the tube.

Here’s another example of dentists donating their time and resources to help out their fellow citizens. According to the New York Times about 35% of Americans have not seen a dentist in the past year. This creates a staggering dental problem for the populace at large, which is why many dentists take it upon themselves to offer days of free dental care where possible. But the article notes these free services are only a temporary solution. The truth is everyone needs to see a dentist regular and also maintain their own dental hygiene with regular flossing and brushing.

The New York Times recently reported that more than 100 million people in the U.S. don’t have dental care and that roughly 35 percent of Americans haven’t seen a dentist in the last year.

Several dentists in Montana decided they wanted to do what they could to remedy America’s dental care problem, according to NBC. Coming from Billings, Broadview and Laurel, these dental care professionals decided to hold Give Back a Smile, a one-day free event for individuals without coverage.

“I don’t think anyone really enjoys coming to the dentist, but everyone we’ve had in here have just been very thankful and very grateful,” Dr Christopher Hirt told the news provider. “These are the sort of toothaches that have been keeping people up at night they can’t function, they can’t eat, and they’ve just been so grateful for us to get them to a place where they can just resume a normal life.”

Today Jim Du Molin discussed how the public views dental care and how many are resentful over the cost. To help illustrate this he referenced a recent NY Times article that discussed the growing use of dental implants. The NYT article said the following:

“In an overwhelming majority of cases, implants to replace lost teeth are by far the best long-term solution for maintaining a healthy mouth. Also, because they rarely need to be replaced, in the long run they are more economical than bridges.

“Bridges are not the standard of care anymore,” Dr. Lawrence J. Kessler, a periodontist and associate professor of surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine, told me in an interview. “For most people who lose teeth, implants are the treatment of choice.”

“About half a million implants are placed each year in this country. On average, the total cost of an implant to replace a single tooth is $3,500 to $4,000 (more if other procedures are required), or about one-third more than the cost of a bridge. But while bridges have an average life span of 10 years, an implant can last a lifetime.”

It’s true that the procedure is expensive, in part because it is expensive for the dentist and also because it is basically a permanent fix for the patient. But as Jim points out, the interesting part of the article are the comments that followed. Many readers were resentful of the cost. Some blamed the insurance companies for treating implants as “experimental”, which is pretty absurd. Therefore, they refuse to cover the treatment. Others blamed the dentists for charging so much for the treatment.

Other readers defended the dentists, however. One stated: “To the person complaining about fees- you pay for the dentist’s time, skill, care and judgment, not an item off the shelf. The dentist didn’t get the skills by purchasing knowledge and skill pills off the shelf. If you are unhappy with the dentist go find one that makes you happy. Having no concept of ALL the costs incurred by the dentist, you’d be ashamed of complaining about the wonderful dentistry you received.”

How do you view dental treatment? Do you resent the insurance company for not covering certain procedures? Do you resent the dentist for his fees? Do you subscribe to the notion that you’re paying for years of expertise so the cost is worth it?

The news is tough these days. It revolves around mostly negative reporting since that’s what gets the most attention. But the Wall Street Journal published a list of 20 medical advances that we can be thankful for – especially in the face of H1N1, health care reform, and the like. One of them, of course, is the amazing advance of dental technology. The WSJ states:

We’re keeping our teeth. “Nearly 40% of U.S. adults have never had a permanent tooth extracted because of dental cavities or periodontal disease in 2004, the most recent data available, compared with 30% in 1994.” Do we brush our teeth more and/or with better toothpaste? Fluoride in the water? Calcium-enriched foods?

And that is something to be grateful for. We take our teeth for granted but without the dental technology we have today and good dental hygiene, our teeth would cause us a lot of pain throughout our lives. If you’re looking for a Knoxville dentist, call us today. We’re friendly, fun, and affordable. Let us show you the same tender and professional care we show all of our patients.

Want the rest of the 20 items? Read below:

We’re in good/excellent health. “Nearly 62% of U.S. adults said they were in excellent or very good health, along with 82% of their children, according to families sampled by the federal government for the National Health Interview Survey, which was conducted in 2007 and released this year.” I’m not entirely sure how accurate this is, given that the NHIS is based on self-reported figures. Anyway, one of my favorite questions in the NHIS survey from 2007 is: “Have you EVER been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease?”

Traffic fatalities are down. “Fewer Americans died in traffic fatalities in 2008 than in any year since 1961, and fewer were injured than in any year since 1988, when the NHTSA began collecting injury data. One possible reason: Seat-belt use hit a record high of 84% nationally.”

We’re expected to live longer. “Life expectancy in the U.S. reached an all-time high of 77.9 years in 2007, the latest year for which statistics are available, continuing a long upward trend. (That’s 75.3 years for men and 80.4 years for women.)” The CDC says that the gap between men and women has been closing, although it stayed the same in 2006 and 2007.

Death rates from the big causes are dropping. “Death rates dropped significantly for eight of the 15 leading causes of death in the U.S., including cancer, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, accidents, diabetes, homicides and pneumonia, from 2006 to 2007. (Of the top 15, only deaths from chronic lower respiratory disease increased significantly.) The overall age-adjusted death rate dropped to a new low of 760.3 deaths per 100,000 people—half of what it was 60 years ago.” I wonder why – better treatment? More awareness? Heart disease and cancer accounted for nearly half (48.5%) of all deaths in 2007. I wonder how many of those were preventable?

Death rates from heart disease are dropping (although it’s still #1). “The death rate from coronary heart disease dropped 34% from 1995 to 2005, though it is still the biggest single killer in the U.S. Deaths from cardiovascular disease dropped 26% over the same period. Deaths from stroke dropped 29% since 1999. Average total cholesterol in adults aged 20 to 74 dropped to 197 milligrams per deciliter in 2008 from 222 in 1962.”

Death rates from cancer are dropping (although still #2). “The death rate from cancer, the second-biggest killer, dropped 16% from 1990 to 2006. That reflects declines in deaths due to lung, prostate, stomach and colorectal cancers in men, and breast, colorectal, uterine and stomach cancers in women.” Again – better treatment? Screening? Why?

We’re keeping our teeth. “Nearly 40% of U.S. adults have never had a permanent tooth extracted because of dental cavities or periodontal disease in 2004, the most recent data available, compared with 30% in 1994.” Do we brush our teeth more and/or with better toothpaste? Fluoride in the water? Calcium-enriched foods?

Kids aren’t staying home sick from school. “Three out of 10 U.S. schoolchildren aged 5 to 17 in 2007 did not miss a single day of school because of illness or injury during the preceding 12 months.” Really? I’d like to compare that with attendance records. Either moms are better at spotting fakers, or they’re sending their kids to school sick. I suppose it really could be that three out of 10 kids are just that healthy.

Hip fractures are down. “Hip fractures – which can rob elderly patients of their mobility
forever – are down nearly 30% in the U.S. and Canada since 1985, for reasons not completely understood.” Maybe the calcium-enriched foods idea? Or more non-slip ducks in bathtubs?

Rates of acute viral hepatitis A, B and C are down. “Thanks in part to vaccines, the rate of acute viral hepatitis A dropped 90% between 1995 and 2006, and acute viral hepatitis B dropped 88% from 1982 to 2006, both to record lows. Acute viral hepatitis C is down to 0.03 from 2.4 cases per 100,000 since 1992, though rates have recently plateaued.”

Improvements are huge on the AIDS/HIV front. “Thanks largely to antiretroviral drugs, U.S. deaths from AIDS dropped 10% from 2006 to 2007, the biggest decline since 1998, and they remain well below the 1995 peak. New cases of AIDS, though static in recent years, also remain well below the 1990s level. Antiretroviral drugs have also helped cut dramatically the number of babies born with HIV in the U.S.; in 2006, there were 28 diagnoses of AIDS among children, down from 195 in 1999.”

There are fewer undernourished kids. “The proportion of undernourished children world-wide under five years of age declined to 20% in 2005 from 27% in 1990.” Is this paralleled by a drop in birth rates?

Divorce rates are dropping. “Chalk this one up as an advance for mental health: The U.S. divorce rate dropped by one-third from 1981 to 2008, and is at its lowest level since 1970. This may be due to more couples postponing marriage or to economic constraints, as well as to couples’ determination to stay together.” I think it’s more the former than the latter, personally.

Fewer schools are selling soda. “From 2006 to 2008, the median percentage of U.S. secondary schools that don’t sell soda rose to 64% from 38%, and those that don’t sell candy or high-fat snacks rose to 64% from 46%, in the 35 states that collect data.” Did anyone see this Sunday’s episode of the Simpsons? Marge turns herself inside out trying to serve healthy snacks at the mommy group, with less-than-desired results. Anyway, I think it’s great they aren’t selling as much soda, but we still need to go after high-sugar containing fruit juices too.

Kids are surviving longer. “Around the world, 27% fewer children died before their fifth birthday in 2007 than in 1990, due to greater use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, better rehydration for diarrhea, and better access to clean water, sanitation and vaccines.”

Less trans fats in our foods. “The amount of trans fats in packaged food has declined by about 50% since 2006, when the Food and Drug Administration began requiring food labels to list it. At least 13 jurisdictions, including California and New York City, have restricted trans fats in restaurant food.” This does not mean we can eat the entire bag of Oreos.

Fewer cases of malaria. “Twenty-seven countries reported a reduction of up to 50% in the number of malaria cases between 1990 and 2006.”

Smoking bans are in effect. “As of this month, 71% of the U.S. population lives under either a state or local ban on smoking in workplaces and/or restaurants and/or bars, and 19 states have banned smoking in all three kinds of places. Research has found that air quality improves and heart-attack rates drop in areas that have enacted smoking bans.”

It’s the little things that count. “Experts have found that some of the best things you can do for your own health are simple and free: Getting adequate sleep can help you lose weight, fight infections, recall memories and think more clearly. Spending just 30 minutes a day in the sunlight to soak up vitamin D across a broad swath of the country can reduce your risk for a variety of cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and many other diseases. Volunteering to help others can lower your risk for depression and heart disease, raise your self-esteem and happiness and extend your life, according to numerous studies.”

Longer lives, happier people. “The longer you live, the happier you are likely to be. Many older adults find that happiness and emotional well-being improve with time; they learn to avoid or limit stressful situations and are less likely to let negative comments or criticism bother them than young adults, according to research presented at the American Psychological Association conference in Toronto this year.”

It’s often been reported that dentists have a high suicide rate. While that statistic is suspect, there’s another study recently done that indicates dentist and clergy as having the lowest divorce rates among people ranked by profession. Others who marry for keeps include engineers, optometrists, and podiatrists. On the other end of the spectrum you’ll find dancers, bartenders, telephone operators, and massage therapists with a much higher likelihood to split up. So if you’re looking for love, make sure you look in all the right places!

Article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/nov/22/dentists-clergymen-longterm-relationships

Those looking for a life of fidelity and loyalty, however, should marry agricultural engineers, optometrists, dentists, members of the clergy and podiatrists.

Dr Michael Aamodt, an industrial psychologist and professor of Industrial and Organisational Psychology at Radford University in Virginia, has invented a formula to work out the likelihood of success for a marriage, based on the percentage of people in 449 occupations who had been in a marital relationship, but were no longer with their spouses.

“To compute the divorce rate for each occupation, we used the following formula: (separated + divorced) divided by (total population – never married).

“This formula yielded the percentage of people in each occupation that had been in a marital relationship, but were no longer with their spouse,” he said.

If you’re looking for a cosmetic dentist in Knoxville, you’re probably unsure how to choose from so many. But there are a few easy steps you can take to make the decision easier. For example, you can ask friends who have had cosmetic dental work done. You can also call a few offices and ask them about their practice and their office. Once you’ve narrowed the list, go visit the office to see if you can get a feel for the staff and the doctor. That can go a long way to making you feel comfortable with your decision.

Visit a Cosmetic Dentist Office

After you’ve done all the background research that you can, now go and personally visit the clinics of a few cosmetic dentists. Make an appointment for a teeth whitening consultation so you can get a feel of the clinic as well as the staff who run it. How you are treated by the various staff members on your first visit to the clinic is an indication of the treatment you can expect to receive on subsequent visits.

Check that cleanliness and hygiene is strictly maintained in all aspects. Most important, watch the dentists attitude towards his patients and his staff. All these observations are very important and go towards forming your opinion about whether this is the right place for you or not. After all there are other cosmetic dentist that you could check who also are reputed for doing teeth whitening procedures.

Experience is Important

Teeth whitening may be a fairly simple procedure, yet you want to be absolutely sure that nothing will go wrong. Practice makes perfect! Keeping this in mind, go to a cosmetic dentist who you know has had a lot of teeth whitening practice if you want to get a perfect job done on your teeth.
Source: http://www.dentopedia.com/article/tips-for-choosing-a-cosmetic-dentist/

Will a robot be doing your dental work in the near future? If it sounds outlandish to you, you’re not alone. It sounds a bit out of this world. But will it ever happen? It never is wise to say never, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon and not for the reasons you might think. It’s not that technology won’t be there very soon, because it will be. Artificial intelligence is moving at break-neck speed. But a robot will never (whoops, there’s that word) be able to give that personal assurance that someone is there with a human touch to make sure you’re alright. A robot won’t be able to display that same type of clinical judgment as a human doctor or dentist. Here’s an article that discusses this issue.

The U.S. has been and continues to be the greatest Nation on earth. That’s evident in many different ways, including our dental health. Through years of education and being devoted to clean and healthy teeth, the U.S. population now avoids many problems that are commonplace in other parts of the world where poor awareness reigns supreme. One such place is Nigeria where people either don’t brush their teeth or use toothpaste that has no fluoride. This results in degenerative and rampant dental problems throughout the country. So be glad for our country and be glad you have the knowledge and resources to care for your body. The article states:

Speaking at the occasion, NDA, Lagos State branch chairperson Dr (Mrs.) Lateefah Lara Agbaje pointed out that lack of proper oral hygiene often results in mouth cancers eventually, noting that many Nigerians do not understand the need to brush their mouth both in the morning and last thing at night. Brushing regularly, she said, especially last thing at night takes care of residual bacteria in the mouth which when left unattended to results in various mouth infections.

The theme of the sensitization forum was Oral Ulcerations and Pre-cancerous Lessons and according to Dr. Agbaje; many Nigerians these days are coming down with oral cancers due to poor oral hygiene.

She emphasized that good oral health was very essential and should include daily use of toothpastes that contain fluouride.

“Fluoride is necessary to strengthen and protect the teeth, that is why we recommend that after brushing, do not rinse out all the paste from your mouth. Simply spitting out is enough. Do not use much water to rinse out, such that you retain some of the fluoride in your mouth to strengthen your teeth and gums,” she explained.

Many people have allergies to latex, which is a problem if your dentist uses latex gloves. However, because of the problems a lot of dentists and doctors, for that matter, have switched to gloves made of other synthetics that don’t cause as many reactions.

There has been a lot of talk about electronic medical records in the health care debate. But in the dental field it is fast becoming the status quo. Many offices have migrated their paper records over to electronic records and have experienced greater efficiency as a result. This press release discusses a large group of affiliated offices that have made the switch recently:

Today we announced that all 195 affiliated practices have migrated from paper charts to electronic dental records (EDRs). The technology is user-friendly because it mimics the way that providers have traditionally used paper charts. EDRs are fully integrated with existing practice management solutions, such as patient treatment plans, charges, insurance records, digital x-rays, appointments and billing. By incorporating EDRs, PDS affiliated owner doctors are now able to run their practices more efficiently while enhancing patient care.

“We are committed to providing dentists with state-of-the-art resources for their practices, and our affiliated dentists have seen a tremendous value in EDRs. Patients’ records are more precise, can be located quickly, and are backed-up to minimize the impact of catastrophic events. Furthermore, our PDS network is secure so patients can be assured that their privacy will continue to be maintained,” said Steve Thorne, Pacific Dental Services founder and president.

“Using EDRs has been such an advantage in running my practice. Ultimately, I was pleased that PDS offered my office the opportunity to make the transition to EDRs so that I can open a chart and study it from any workstation in my office. The time I would have spent locating my patients’ charts can now be allocated to treating the patients themselves,” said Lance Rygg, DDS. “Of course, the fact that EDRs are environmentally friendly, require less storage space, and are backed-up in the event of an emergency are also great benefits.”

It reiterates what the WSJ said before that pricing and competition will spur more acquisitions in this industry and that costs will continue to fall as a result. That can only work to the consumer’s advantage and it’s something supported by the dental industry.

Teeth whitening is becoming more and more common as people gain confidence from a bright smile. And when done under proper supervision teeth whitening is totally safe and worthwhile. However, in some cases you’re offered the service at a lower price with untrained professional providing the service. Such is the case with this store in Canada. The Manitoba Dental Association issued a warning to consumers over their practices.

Dr. Joel Antel of the MDA said that should give people pause. Antel said he worries the Pearly Whites’ treatment could hurt people if there’s no qualified dentist or hygienist involved.

If you need teeth whitening or any other type of dental procedure, be sure to go to an experienced and qualified Knoxville dentist. Otherwise you’re playing with fire.

The article states:

“You could have pain or treatment needs that weren’t there beforehand … because of the whitening procedure,” Antel said.

Don Freedlander, president of the Canadian Dental Association, said teeth bleaching should be done only by dental professionals.

“I think there are contraindications to bleaching that it would be worthwhile to have your dentist check and those include various gum problems — tooth decay, exposed roots — and these are all things that I don’t think someone who’s in one of these bleaching clinics is able or qualified to check,” he said.

If you have a problem with a tooth, odds are you know it. Are bodies are pretty good at telling us when something isn’t right. But you may not know what it would take to fix it. Is there a cavity that needs to be filled? Is the tooth good enough to be saved? Do I need a crown? An Implant? A Veneer? What’s the difference between the three?

We get these kinds of questions a lot. And they’re good questions. The kind of questions you want your Knoxville dentist to be able to answer in a way you understand. Well here’s a great article that explains it in basic terms. You won’t need a dental degree to understand it either. There are a few weird punctuation errors, but I think that could just be from a browser error.

Let us know what you think or if you have any questions. And then call in today to get that tooth looked at.
