Social media is permeating all facets of our lives, and it’s no different for dentists. There is good and bad that comes with these new forms of marketing. The good is that we can interact more closely with our patients and connect with them on a more personal level. The bad is that it’s still important to keep a professional relationship and the closer you get to your patients the harder that is to do. This is especially true on Facebook. But luckily there are ways to get the best of both worlds:

The number one concern I hear from dentists about marketing via Facebook is “privacy”. Dentists, and team members, are worried about patients accessing their personal Facebook accounts once they participate on behalf of a practice/business Facebook page. However, once we review the appropriate privacy settings for personal accounts, that hurdle is easily overcome.

In fact, it’s a good idea to set a Facebook guideline for your practice such as: If posting, commenting or interacting on behalf of the practice (on the practice page), please be sure your privacy settings are set as “private” for your personal Facebook account. This will help ensure that team members personal lives remain separate from the practice.

If you take care of your teeth they will last, well, a lifetime. It may sound too simple to be true, but it isn’t. Flossing and brushing regularly and thoroughly will prevent nearly all types of dental decay. Add to the mix a regular cleaning at the dentists office and you are virtually guaranteed to avoid teeth problems. The reason is because this preventative treatment removes harmful plaque that will harbor bacteria that causes tooth decay.

Another reason to see the dentist is to catch a small problem before it becomes a major one. Doing so may cost a little money now but it will save a whole lot more money down the road. Prevention really is the key. Do you need a dentist in Knoxville TN to check out your pearly whites? Then call us today to set up an appointment. We’re here to serve you in a comfortable and affordable environment. Call now!

The first rule of dental care is to brush and floss thoroughly every day. Dentists recommend that patients brush their teeth twice a day for three minutes and floss at least once a day. By doing this you help to keep plaque at bay. Plaque is a bacteria-rich substance that erodes tooth enamel causing dental decay and eventually tooth loss. By regular and effective brushing you can stop the build up of plaque and help protect your teeth. This is the most important way of maintaining good dental health.

Very close on its heels however, is keeping up regular check ups with your dentist. It is advisable to see your dentist every six months even if you are experiencing no problems with your teeth. Even the most ardent and strict tooth cleaner may be susceptible to dental decay and catching it early could be the difference between keeping and losing a tooth. Dentists are also able to examine and clean areas of the teeth that are very difficult to clean with manual brushing and flossing. These are the areas that are most at risk from dental decay, precisely because they are hard to reach.

Will a robot be doing your dental work in the near future? If it sounds outlandish to you, you’re not alone. It sounds a bit out of this world. But will it ever happen? It never is wise to say never, but it doesn’t seem likely to happen anytime soon and not for the reasons you might think. It’s not that technology won’t be there very soon, because it will be. Artificial intelligence is moving at break-neck speed. But a robot will never (whoops, there’s that word) be able to give that personal assurance that someone is there with a human touch to make sure you’re alright. A robot won’t be able to display that same type of clinical judgment as a human doctor or dentist. Here’s an article that discusses this issue.

Sometimes people wonder whether dental sedation is safe. The answer is yes, it’s very safe. As with any drug, however, there are risks associated with it. A perfectly healthy person can have a poor reaction to any drug, no matter how benign. However, when administered properly and to an age-appropriate patient, dental sedation is extremely safe. The following article discusses dental sedation in more detail:

Sedation options range from general sedation, to IV sedation, oral conscious sedation, nitrous oxide, and a variety of other modalities that are less commonly used. Sedation is often used in dentistry to help fearful patients complete procedures in a relaxed state without anxiety. It can also make surgery easier to perform because patients are much less likely to move at an inopportune moment, which can make the procedure more challenging.

One of the most common techniques utilized by dentists all over the country is oral conscious sedation. With oral conscious sedation, patients just take a safe little pill one hour before their appointment. This pill helps them to relax and eliminates their dental fear. Most patients snooze through the appointment, feel no discomfort, and have no memory of the procedures.

Many of these fearful patients begin chewing without pain and smiling with confidence for the first time in years. These benefits are often life-changing for people who have procrastinated getting their mouths healthy or enhancing their smiles. Sedation dentistry is even beneficial for patients who aren’t fearful, but would like to be more comfortable during lengthy dental procedures.

Of course, there are inherent risks with the use of any drug, so a careful consideration of one’s age and medical history is essential before utilizing any of these sedation techniques. Additionally, it is important for the dental team to discuss these issues thoroughly so that patients understand any potential drawbacks. However, when sedation is appropriate for a patient and it is administered properly, it is extremely safe.
